Escalier “Casse-Cou” is one of the 30 famous Stairways in Old Quebec City.

Very french tradtion.
This Casse-Cou stairway, joins the street “Côte de la Montagne” to street “rue du Petit-Champlain”, Place Royale. It almost has the same age as the town, more then 400 years old.

Yannik, this is a stunning photo, love the BW! Why are the stairs called “Casse-Cou”? Is it the shape or is one likely to break one’s neck if falling down?

  • Thank you very much Baina for the lovely comment. And to answer your question, yes it is because the stairway is quite steep and one could break it’S neck if they fell down.
Another version for the reason for the name would be that at the time of the American attack, when the american soldiers would have named it: Break Neck Steps (Escalier Casse-cou) :)
