The Wisdom of W'tson - part 4
To begin with, W’Tson was little more than a bag carrier for his new master. When Hran Tzien would go to the house of a rich family to tutor one of their children, W’tson would sit on the floor, in a corner, silent. But silence allows the ears to hear and the eyes to see, and W’Tson had keen hearing and keen sight. For, sitting silently on the floor, whilst Hran Tzien tutored the children of the rich, meant that he was also receiving tutoring, for free.
He absorbed everything that he heard, but it wasn’t without questioning. It was just that he was not allowed to question until, late at night, after they both arrived home, after the evening meal had been eaten, after W’tson had cleared everything away, and prepared the mornings food and ensured the fire was built high, only then was he permitted to ask those burning questions which he had retained in his head during the day.
W’tson had not been with Hran Tzien but 6 passings of the full moon, when the wise old tutor began to realise that his young servant had as keen a mind as any of his rich students, and perhaps even more so.
Thus it was that W’tson spent the next five years of his life. Sitting in silence
and listening, watching and learning and questioning.
And so, uneventfully, he grew from a young boy into a young man. Uneventful, that is, until his master went for the first time to the house of one of the richest merchants in Liash Shentin, to tutor the man’s daughter, and W’tson fell prey to one of the most powerful emotions of all; love.
