The Wisdom of W'tson - part 3

part-1
part-2

Having just become a Man, W’tson looked ahead to the hard Northern Winter, when food is scarce but work is easier as the fields were barren and cold.

But tragedy was to strike. His Father, who had for all his life known his son was special, and although his brothers just saw him as lazy and easily distracted, had sought to gently encourage his youngest son, fell ill, quite suddenly and passed away.

In that moment both terrible loss and unforeseen opportunity presented themselves. Once the formalities of burial and mourning had been fulfilled, W’tson’s brothers took the opportunity to rid themselves of, as they saw it, an unproductive burden.

However, his eldest brother, now the head of the family, was not an unkind person. He made some investigations and finally negotiated a formal Ghazien with a teacher, Hran Tzien, in the nearest city of Liash Shentin. The Ghazien meant that W’Tson became an apprentice and helper to the teacher in return for a small payment paid to the family every full moon.

Thus it was that, with his one goat, W’tson sadly said goodbye to his Mother, Sister and Brothers, and left his family to begin a new life in the city, and in the scholastic environment that would nurture him in the future.

Life has many disappointments,
not because we expect too much of ourselves,
but because we expect too much of others.
