12/14/08 - Selected as one of the best photographers of 2008 is a true SCAM

Yesterday I received an email from Photo Laureates concerning the fact that I was selected as one of the best photographers of 2008. Which sounds pretty good, but in matter of fact to good to be true! One of my redbubble friends, Claire Farley , (I really owe her something right now) googled Photo Laureates and came to an awful conclusion. Photo Laureates is a true SCAM. So be aware, don’t submit your work and make the same mistake as I did! Click here to see the proof of the SCAM!

My email to Claire

Dear Claire,

Thank you so much for leaving that link about the fake challenge. I was really surprised about the win and lucky me I was so exited I didn’t read the email very good. I thought the book and the plaque were send to me without any payments and that other people could order the same book as well.

I truly appreciate you googled Photo Laureates for me. I wasn’t aware of those SCAM challenges, it all sounded so good and the site looked pretty real. But after some good research on the site, you’ll find some unusual things as names and other stuff. Snoop Dogg is one our editors etc. I’m really blaming myself I didn’t noticed the SCAM. Also when I agreed with the terms of agreement I thought isn’t that a little bit short for a term of agreement? But the stupid me clicked the button and uploaded his picture.

The only thing that I’m worried about now is they do have my original picture in full size. It has happened to me before that one of my pictures got stolen and used in a photography challenge. So I hope they won’t steal my pictures for that kind of use.

I will try to find out how I can block this site for other people who just want to enter their work in a challenge for more experience and feedback. I think this, “fake company”, isn’t legal at all and I will try to find out how and if I can take any legal actions against them. Faking photography challenges and asking people to buy books, plaques and biographies which are not existing is a really bad thing. I will try to get my work off that site as quick as possible.

Again I learned something on the Internet, don’t submit your work at any challenge without reading the terms of agreement and googling them up. Also challenges with free entries are suspicious when the winner’s prize is such a high number.

Once again I would like to thank you for your kindness and helping me out and getting me out of that “to good to be true” dream. I think I’m not such a good photographer to deserve such a great title. Just 19 years old, at the beginning of my life and carrying such a title is no good!

All the best,

Brendan

I was almost scammed by a group like this. if i am not mistaken, if you buy a book and plaque in advance, one of your pictures will appear in the book. Some of them are just vanity publishers. I’m sorry that it did not work out for you.

  • Brendan Schoon replied

It is not a big deal, I think I’m to young to carry such a great title. And my work is not that good! The only thing I hate is that I can’t delete my uploaded work! I’ve googled the street address of Photo Laureates at the bottom of my mail and it doesn’t exist, click here

Brendan that’s awful. I’m so glad you found out about this though. I agree with Johan, you are a truly talented photographer….don’t think any different! These people saw your excellent work decided to try and capitalise on it in a truly deceitful way. Take care :)

Hi Brendan,to tell you the true I believed that they have selected your work to be published in an Anthology. This is the most important thing becouse on this site (where are a lot of very talented artists) a lot of people believed that you were selected. You are very talented photographer my friend! Take care, Béla

I looked at the forum link you put up and it was worse than I thought. I’d like to say something rude about those Photo Laureates but not here!! :P Thankyou for raising awareness of these people!

  • Brendan Schoon replied

Thanks Ursula, it is pretty bad, many people are getting fooled by these … !! Trying to find out if it is legal to do this and if I can take any legal actions against them. Letting people pay for a book or something else that doesn’t exist is pretty rude.

I am so sorry…what a huge let down…and then the anger, or at least that is what I feel. You are a photographer of extreme talents. While this is a scam, I am sure there are many, many more awards in your future.

  • Brendan Schoon replied

A huge let down but I expected something like this. Because which photo contest lets a winner pay for his own prize. Sounds pretty strange, and not even low prizes no US$69 for the book and US$49 for the plaque. Lucky me I didn’t read the email that email very good. Thought the book and plaque were free for me and others had to pay.

Thanks for your supporting comment. Truly appreciate your kindness.

Cheer up…you are only 19 so years ahead to get that fame…..really usually these smart a** don’t get their cover blown. they prey on our innate pride and greed.
Did they get your money? i would just move on and learnfrom the experience

  • Brendan Schoon replied

Nope they didn’t get my money! Didn’t bought that stuff, though to think about it one more day and than this happened!! So lucky me!! Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated!!

Hi Beve, sorry for the late response, but have been really busy lately. I totally agree with you, why are some people seeing the fun in scamming others? Thanks for leaving a comment. Much appreciated.

Brenden, I am sorry to see this happen. I am glad it was caught before it all went to far…
There was a site I was involved in a few years back that did the same thing… it is good for the ego but bad for the pocket book/wallet…
You do deserve the praise and the awards… as most of us on RB do… great work…

  • Brendan Schoon replied

Hi Jeff, sorry for the late response. Thanks for your great comment. Hopefully one day these people will stop scamming.

If you would like to enter some photo contest that are not scams try www.smithsonianmag.com or www.nationalgeographic.com the Smithsonian mag deadline is december 31 and National Geographic is an ongoing thing. It alows you to upload one photo a month and the magazine publishes 12 of the photos. I haven’t had one published but at least they are two well known reconized contest.

  • Brendan Schoon replied

Hi, thanks for your comment. Much appreciated. I’m already a member at nationalgeographic and smithsonian, these contest are really cool. I entered my work in the photo laureates because I wanted to enter more challenges. Still thanks for the comment and tip. Truly appreciated.

Brendan, I just read some forums about this fkn scam.
It’s amazing how they cheat people to buy a fkn book! And they even GLUE your “chosen” picture on the book.
I’m glad you didn’t fall on this one. The only thing I can say to those guys is F**K YOURSELVES!

  • Brendan Schoon replied

Hi Juan, you are so right. One of my first reactions was almost similar to yours. LOL!! Still those people gotta be stopped. Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated.

I got a similar email today.. I had a good read and to me it didnt seem legit. Luckily I threw a huge water mark over the picture when I submitted it and reduced the quality before uploading.

  • Brendan Schoon replied

Hi Bryan, thanks for leaving a comment!! Yup very clever to place a watermark over the picture. Maybe I should do this too in future challenge that look suspicious! Thanks for stopping by.
