Background Information:
Monument Valley is located on the southern border of Utah with northern Arizona (around 36°59′N, 110°6′W). The valley lies within the range of the Navajo Nation Reservation, and is accessible from U.S. Highway 163. The Navajo name for the valley is Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii (Valley of the Rocks).
The area is part of the Colorado Plateau. The floor is largely Cutler Red siltstone or its sand deposited by the meandering rivers that carved the valley. The valley’s vivid red color comes from iron oxide exposed in the weathered siltstone. The darker, blue-gray rocks in the valley get their color from manganese oxide.
Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Appearances include movies, such as Westerns by Director John Ford, and science fiction movies such as Back to the Future III; television appearances as in MacGyver; as well as DVD covers, book covers, and video games such as the Playstation 3 video game Motorstorm. source: wikipedia

I love this shot. It reminds me of when I trekked the Grand Canyon. But this has a back country remote feel to it. Can I ask… Was this a candid or a set shot?
Brendan Schoon replied
Hi Jeff, thanks for the comment. This was a little bit of both, before I went to Monument Valley I had seen some pictures with a composition like this. If you buy a guided tour you will be able to reach the same point where this picture is taken. If you give the horseman a few dollars he will walk to this point. If I moved my camera more to the left, I was able to create a much better composition but on the road were many RV’s, cars etc. I didn’t like that in a shot like this. I wanted to create a wild western shot or something. So to my opinion this was more a set shot then a candid shot! Brendan
Jeff Harris
Cool! Thanks for the info. I like to try to figure out photos. Still this is a great shot!
Rachel Stickney
Wow, this is stunning! I just love the southwestern United States. I only got to drive by Monument Valley in 2002 but I did visit Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon among others. Too bad I only had a film P&S at the time. I’ll just have to go back!

Brendan – this shot is gorgeous – the good thing about the cloud is that it has given you ‘even’ lighting – no harsh shadows or blown areas in the shot – love it :)

This is fantastic, Brendan. I went to Monument Valley last year. I stayed at Gouldings Campgrounds for three nights. It was magic. I missed the Horseman at Ford’s Point by a few minutes as we had taken the self drive tour. There were still a lot of tourists around, and one standing on the point itself, so unfortunately I didn’t get a photo of it, but I have many other photos of this fantastic place. This is a Fave!!
Dennis Gay
G’day BRENDAN!
Like an old advertisement for Malboro cigarettes, this lone cowboy stands out so well in his red shirt and white hat in this vast canyon landscape and makes a very strong focal point. He also adds a great sense of scale to this very fine photograph.
A great scene, nicely composed, showing good depth and focus and absolutely wonderful colours and shapes.
A real joy to view.
