Background Information:
This picture is taken near Athabasca Falls . Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park is just 23 metres high. However, it is not known for its height. Instead it is known for the force of the falling water due to the quantity of water flowing. Even on a cold morning in the fall, copious amounts of water flow over the falls. A layer of hard quartzite has allowed the falls to cut into the softer limestone below carving the short gorge and a number of potholes. White water rafting often starts below the falls to travel downstream on the Athabasca River to Jasper, Alberta.

It is a class 5 waterfall, with a drop of 80 ft (24 m) and a width of 60 ft (18 m).

Great work Brendan and I don’t think you’ll ever hear me complaining about a lack of foreground interest in YOUR shots!! You are one of the lucky ones who have a natural eye for what makes a good photo. Peter

  • Brendan Schoon replied

Thank you very much, Peter! I really appreciate your kindness. And I am very happy to be one of those lucky ones. Most of time when I’m at a location I first look for a good composition. This is not always working because sometimes a fast taken shot without thinking is much better. Brendan

    Brendan,this capture is fabulous!Splendid work!

Almost perfect. Better for me wih a slightly higher viewpoint so the large rock does’nt project above the horizon though.

  • Brendan Schoon replied

Hi Dave, thank you so much for your supporting comment. I always like to hear how I can improve my pictures!! Much appreciated. The reason why I placed this rock above the horizon is because of the blue sky. The rock is pointing in the direction of the blue sky! Maybe a slightly higher viewpoint would have been much better but who knows!! Thanks again for you constructive criticism. Brendan

Hi Brendan … I see your point about the rock …. thanks for explaining the reason behind the composition.

beautiful composition .. is this down on the beach part there down the steps” ... I just sat there forever enjoying the view ..

  • Brendan Schoon replied

Yup down the steps, and then walk on the stony beach! I made a whole series photographs there, this was the best. There was a group people on the beach and they kept walking in front of my camera, it was very annoying. Couldn’t work very relaxt! lol

Nice composition, although I’d have liked a higher perspective too. One thing I learnt on a workshop last year, was to spend time trying from a variety of angles, then deciding afterwards which looks best. You’ve made a good job with the processing too.

wonderful composition with this one. The forground rock is not to overpowering and the dramatic sky finishes the image perfectly

Fantastic low angle and use of thirds, the muted colours really reflect the day and weather. Excellent exposure
