This is another of my favourite old shots of our girls. It was taken at our 50 acre property at The Caves QLD Australia in 2005, when the girls were 7 and 8 years old. This shot was taken soon after we moved to the farm, and the girls loved playing on our old tractor… ‘Just like REAL farm girls!’
I’ve always loved this shot and have wanted to do something special with it for a while. This photo manipulation was created with 4 layers. The base layer was a colour layer. I converted the other 3 to b&w, then erased the tractor, shirts and skin/hair of the girls in varying stages. Each layer was then given differing levels of opacity to achieve differing degrees of selective colouring. Then each layer was aged (a noise filter) by varying degrees (I was hoping to achieve the look of an old newspaper clipping, albeit coloured). Finally, some dodging and burning around the edges and a frame that’s reminiscent of old photo edges… and hey presto… we have turned something new (ish) into something old (ish).
