My granddaughter in her bath tub. It’s really a plastic bucket, just big enough for her to sit in. Since she can’t sit up by herself just yet, we bath her in the bucket. This stops her from accidentally falling over in the water. I did this with all of my children, and now my daughter does this for her daughter.
You see, in a hot climate such as ours, water can be a blessing. Sometimes when it’s hot and sticky we all like to just luxuriate and cool down with a nice cool bath… even babies who can’t keep their heads out of the water. However, it’s just not practical for a new mum to spend all day sitting in the bath holding their baby to cool him or her down.
Solution (at least for times when you’d like to watch your favourite TV shows, fold the clothes or just take that much needed 15 minute sit-down)… choose a bucket that is big enough for them to sit in but small enough that they can’t fall over or slip down into the water. Then put an inch or so of water in the bottom and (easily) carry the bucket anywhere you like (eg… in front of your favourite lounge chair). Use a face washer and/or a cup to drip water over your baby’s skin. Most babies love being wet, especially on a hot day… and this way you can leave them wet for a longer period than the average bath, thus keeping them cooler and happier for longer. It also gives Mum the chance to safely watch baby without having to be totally ‘hands-on’ all the time. Of course, never leave your baby unsupervised near any body of water. But if used with some common sense, this idea can make life a little bit easier for that overworked, overtired (and often overwhelmed) new mother.
