Nobby's Lighthouse Newcastle NSW - A Bird Eye View! by

Nobby’s Lighthouse is our town’s icon and stands proudly at the mouth of the Hunter River and the port entrance to Newcastle NSW Australia. Once an island, Governor Macquarie began a grand project to fill the area between Nobby’s and Fort Scratchley to form what is now known as Macquaire Pier … and creating a safer port of call for the many sailing ships of that era and now today, the many coal ships that frequent this port daily. Its always a challenge to shoot this headland from a different angle and this time I chose to do it from a mobile crane that towered above the Foreshore Park during the Truck Festival in October 2009. Beyond the lighthouse is also a huge breakwall that has been built in more recent years to further protect shipping in the region.

Thats a great shot…who’s crane was it?

  • Thanks Woody … I think it was Structural Cranes … it was huge and you got a magnificent view of Newcastle and the Harbour … hopefully they will have it there again this year and we’ll go back up again!

Unusual angle from a mobile crane basket that cost me $20 for the 5 minute full extension lift.

    Congratulations on the feature.

  • Matt, thanks for the comment. I am unsure what the insurance premiums would have been for the crane operators.

Hi Phil – didn’t bother going out as I had pics of those anyway – worries me a bit the way they’ve changed it so we don’t get the big shows, and all the extra aircraft. Hope to get up for the one up there in September though and get some more shots around Newie as well.
