This little tree amazes me. During this past summer, the hottest on record in Arkansas, this tree seemed to die. It’s leaves were brown and falling in late July, it’s branches were bare in early august….dead, killed by heat. Amazingly, in late August when the rains returned leaves began to grow again. When the seasonal change of late October began its work on other trees this tree’s new leaves remained fresh and green. Today, Dec 3, after all other leaves have fallen and Autumn has been forgotten, this little survior remembered. It delayed it’s autumn to give the green leaves time to produce enough food to keep it alive for the winter. Once that job was done, the tree opened its mind to the sleepy Autumn. Late, but not forgotten.

the picture is lovely . . the story is marvelous. love the lessons here Phillip!

  • Thanks Y, this tree is just a few steps from my front door, and only today did I notice the red leaves. The enitre transformation seems to have happened overnight.
Yes, there are lessons to be learned from the little tree : ) Excellent observation.

this is a beautiful shot Phillip, i love the gorgeous deep red of the leaves and I love this little trees determination to survive :-))))

  • Thank you Lisa : )
This little tree amazed me; it re-lived Spring and Summer, then invented it’s own personal Autumn. I think it did it on purpose just to spend December being the prettiest girl in the yard : )

What a gorgeous little survivor …so well captured

  • Oh yes, gorgeous indeed were these leaves during the Christmas season last year. Unfortuantely I have had to move from the place where this little tree lives! I hope it is doing ok this Autumn.

This tree was a brave little soldier! I’m glad you like it. It was the last spot of color nature had to offer that year. Can you see all the gray baron trees in the background?
