I am an aborigine.

I was born on the land of my ancestors, raised in our ancient culture with our ancient tongue.

An ancient culture of people close to the land with knowledge of plants, animals and spirits. A culture who’s connection to the land has been eroded, and a culture now re-discovering itself as leaders in the care for the environment.

My culture is emotionally robust and strong as well as rationally rigorous. We value direct, honest communication and consider it honourable for the individual to represent themselves fully. We are a culture where the individual is not lost in the collective, but can stand strong within it. We are not afraid to confront ourselves or others and we encourage people to take responsibility for their own feelings. We instil self confidence in our children, based on their right and our expectation of them to think for themselves. We value inquiry, everything may be questioned. Nothing is too sacred for the magnifying glass of analysis or openness to reveal what is true and what is real. We even literally dig up the bones of our ancestors to try to understand our past.

But this old culture is not welcome everywhere. Cultures which value the indirect over the direct, which value obedience over independence, acceptance over inquiry, the collective over the individual, and which expect the individual to bend themselves to please others, such cultures find our culture confronting and arrogant.

I am a German aborigine, living in Australia. What am I to do with this ancient culture of mine?
