Clock Tower, Palace of Westminster, London, UK by

Strictly, “Big Ben” is the name of the great bell that chimes the number of the hours from the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster, that huge Victorian complex containing the two Houses of Britain’s Parliament, the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Although Charles Barry was the architect with overall responsibility for this vast project, the clock tower was the last completed design by the great Augustus Pugin, who also created the interiors of both debating chambers. This is the largest four-faced chiming clock and the third-tallest free-standing clock tower in the world, and forms what is probably the most iconic image of London for most people both within and outside the United Kingdom.

(Technical note: this is a selective colour image, a combination of the rebalanced, full-colour original and the monochrome version of the same shot.)
