The Kings Head, The Square, Wickham, southern England by

Wickham in Hampshire is one of those rare gems that has retained all its picturesque charm but is still a proper working village, not just a tourist destination. On The Square, whose layout dates from medieval times and which is very much the heart of the place, you can find an independent butcher, baker and pharmacist, not to mention a florist, a sweet shop, a dry cleaner, a fish and chip shop, and so the list goes on. In short, the residents can find everything for day to day life on the doorstep without the need to get in a car. And of course in an old English village the old market square is bound to have a fine old pub or two. This one is The King’s Head, a coaching inn dating from the 18th century with later 19th century modifications, beautifully and sensitively refurbished in 2004. It is amongst English Heritage’s Grade II listed buildings. Anyone for a pint of Fuller’s best bitter?

(And can anyone suggest with any confidence which particular king is portrayed on the inn’s sign: presumably he is a medieval English monarch, but which one, exactly?)

I am based near Winchester in mid-Hampshire (UK) and have enjoyed photographing a wide variety of subjects for over 40 years, though the digital revolution has been a real boon.

  • Many thanks for yet another feature. I was a little frustrated that I could not find more detail about the history of the Kings Head itself: I will keep looking! Philip

What a beautiful place! Those cars seem like the anachronism in this scene. It’s like being able to step through a time machine…then the cars bring me back to reality.

  • It’s a modern, working village square, so the cars are inevitable; but equally, they help keep this place working and important to people. Thank you for adding this to your favourites. Philip

An utterly delightful scene Philip and so beautifully photographed. If ever a picture shrieked out,“England” then it’s this one.
He does look to be rather a young king but darned if I can remember enough of my history to say which one that was.

Do some research on Richard 111, who was the last of the Plantagenet Kings and who ruled in the mid 1400’s. He was only in his 30’s when he died on the battlefield. I’m not saying he’s the one on the sign but you never know!!
