Artist's Description

This beautiful example of modern stained glass by Tom Denny can be found on the south side of Tewkesbury Abbey in Gloucestershire, England.

Commissioned and paid for by the Friends of Tewkesbury Abbey, this is one of a pair of windows under the title Prayer and Work, installed in the Abbey in 2002. They echo the motto of St Benedict: “Laborare est Orare” (To work is to pray). This, the right hand of the pair, represents Work.

At the foot of a pillar masons are at work – a reminder of the Norman pillars in the Abbey’s nave.

A kneeling figure contemplates the works of God – O Lord, how manifold are Thy works (Psalm 104). He wears a leafy crown connecting him to a landscape that extends up to the top of the window where angels are seen.

At the bottom people are planting a tree and at the top people are hoeing. In the middle, a group walks through the landscape and " … cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul to Thee." (Psalm 143)

Tewkesbury Abbey is one of English Heritage’s Grade 1 listed buildings.
