Like so many chalk streams that run to England’s south coast, at various places the Itchen splits into several channels, some natural, some man-made. It does exactly this as it flows past Winchester, but by the time it reaches these meadows, just south of St Cross, most of the channels have reunited to form a reasonably substantial river. Here we see the chilly waters on a late November morning.
