Artist's Description

The steamer “Trasimeno” begins another day on the vast lake in Italy after which it is named, as the waterfowl glide by oblivious in the opposite direction.

It seems hard to believe that just north of here, in 217 BC, the invading Hannibal and his armies inflicted one of the worst defeats in Rome’s history with a brilliantly conceived and executed ambush of the forces under the command of Gaius Flaminius, who was himself killed in the battle. Many of the Roman soldiers ran into the lake to avoid capture, but were drowned instead.
