Mill House, The Water Meadows, Winchester, southern England.

Mill House, The Water Meadows, Winchester, southern England.

The way to Winchester’s Water Meadows from the city centre goes south along College Walk, turns right past Winchester College’s New Hall and then left through a little gate. Here one is greeted by the sight of this charming late eighteenth century house at the start of the path that runs in between two streams of the River Itchen, flanked by some of the College’s playing fields. The white railings are part of the little foot-bridge that crosses the mill stream to reach the front door.

Though he does not mention it by name, John Keats must have passed Mill House as he took his daily walks out to St Cross in the Autumn of 1819.

It is one English Heritage’s grade-listed buildings.
