Statue of King Alfred the Great, Winchester, UK, also available on a T-shirt
This statue of Alfred the Great, the only English king accorded the honour of that title, was commissioned from the eminent Victorian sculptor Sir (William) Hamo Thornycroft to mark the 1000th anniversary of Alfred’s death. It stands looking West up the present-day High Street in Winchester, Alfred’s capital in his kingdom of Wessex.
Thornycroft (1850 – 1925) was a leading member of the so-called New School of sculpture in late Victorian England and was consequently a great inspiration to other sculptors and artists of his day. His heroic statues are held in high regard. Major public works include the Gladstone Monument next to St Clement Danes in London’s Strand, Oliver Cromwell in front of the Houses of Parliament and General Gordon in the Victoria Embankment Gardens.
The statue is listed as a Grade II structure by English Heritage. The text at the nearest corner of the bronze base reads
Hamo Thornycroft RA
