The Last Sunset And The Old Barn
The remnants of the old barn
lit by the setting sun
ablaze in it’s magnificence
Painting the sky with it’s intensity
creates shadows of flashing fire
that spill across the weathered boards
bathing the crumbling giant
awash in remembered glory
The boards are no longer weather worn
and gray
but imbued with the colors of the sky overhead
The haunting sound of cattle lowing
within the confines of it’s mellow memory
An old farm tractor can be faintly heard
as it drives through the doors hanging
loosely upon their rusted hinges
The remembered fragrance of soft hay
still permeates the crumbling shell
cloaked now in the musty odor of time
Ghost figures stroll from out of the
shadows of the past
spotlighted in a misty shimmer
by the glory of the setting sun
work worn hands stroke a days worth
of sweat from non-existent brows
Times of hard work and pride
come alive as the vibrant glow
caresses the splintered edges of what was
Stubbornly the old barn has held fast
Clinging to hope as more walls
tumble to the gound
Lopsided in the continual decay
A silent plea for renewal falls onto the
winds of time
Sad and dejected, tears of years,
stain it’s weathered boards
Where rain, snow and the relentless sun
left their harshness upon it’s aging frame
Time has become the barn’s enemy
a ruthless foe, intent upon his demise
He knows there are not many years left
Soon he will join the dust of the earth
upon which he stands
There he will lay down his last boards
and retreat to memories of glories past
But for tonight he will bask in what
will probably be his Last Sunset

Truly your are guided by the Country Boy in you
Yes Sir your eye on the prairies is dirt in the face of
all the nay sayers in the Big Cities, these fields ain’t
without wonder, and far be it from a Southern Saskachewnian
or Albertan for that matter to be bored and tired by the glories
of yesterday, perhaps I am too young for the britches I seem to be able to speak from but my Great Grand Dad Settle and Farmed, and My Grand Dad too
31 years in the Big City and all the riff raff there could not disassemble that which has been richly bred into me through Heritage. The Blood sweat and Tears of the early folk should always speak loud and clear, living for real things in life should always be in the forefront of our minds. Freedom Family and Forever.
