This photograph was taken shortly after dawn at The Boneyard on Bombo Headland, near Kiama on the south coast of NSW, Australia in August 2011. The basalt columns are the remnants of a quarry. In a large swell such as was occurring on the shoot, the waves crash into the columns and go straight up, so this shot was merely a question of timing. Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon TS-E 45mm f2.8 Tilt+Shift lens, ISO 50, f8, 1/4 second, no filters, manual focus. Larger view here (not on RB). Edit: see my Reply to a Comment below as to how this shot was achieved in sequence.

That’s fantastic, Peter! Wow, that must be hell trying to keep your filters dry!

  • thanks Mel. the swell was huge, but our possy was protected by the very same basalt columns and our shooting position was quite high, as you can see from the angle.

Peter, cannot for one moment believe this is “just a question of timing” – outstanding expertise, compostion and patience – a wonderful capture and image !!

  • Frame, put camera on tripod, remote, do test shots to get exposure right, wait ….. click. Easy.

  • Thanks very much Linda, I’m glad to be able to capture what was quite a stunning scene. On a subsequent trip there we spotted two fisherman on that rock scouring for bait!
