Art or Photography
Every time I upload a photo now with this here new interface thingy, it tells me, ie doesn’t ask, Art or Photography. Well danged if that don’t confuse the hell outta a simple guy like me. So’s I got me to thinkin’ maybe they’re lookin’ for some of that arty farty stuff that when you look at it like the first time you go “WTF?” or something like that. So, there you go, as you do.

Yep – I asked that exact same question in the description of my shots some days ago…. Gives me the irrits a little really, as if I have to decide what I’m uploading is one or the other and well – how do I know?????
So Peter… which one of the 2 is this one meant to be?
Seems a little dangerous really – were you risking life and limb to get a shot before that big dark crusty looking thing fell down on top of your head and your beautiful camera? And – the other question that springs to mind is – what actually were you and your camera standing on to get this shot? Or – Ooooo. NOW I get it!!!!
You didn’t actually go through any of that process at all!!! So – this one must be of the ‘Art’ category…....

Peter Hill replied
Bingo. Yep, I only took a boring example of my craft. and turning it around is art. Yes?
Mick Davson

Peter Hill replied
Oooh, close, but no bananas!
The wall of a rockpool, shot with the camera resting on it. The water level on the right was higher than on the left.

But do you know Peter, in case you think that that arty farty stuff is not arty enough and hit the “Delete” button, the Interface Thingy asks you:
“Do you REALLY REALLY want to delete this work? You cannot undo this, at all – ever. Seriously.”
That what it says, capitals and all. Seriously…
Aren’t you glad they don’t have it voice activated… Yet
Peter Hill replied
Oh, the horrors!

Sorry, I don’t understand it. ... my english is too poor.
what is arty farty? and WTF? and what is the difference between photography
and art. Tanks in advance for your explications to a simple guy.
Peter Hill replied
Written with my tongue in cheek, making fun of the artwork upload pages, and its new “helpful” description of our work as “art and/or photography”, which is an oxymoron, a Rex Mossop Special, a contradiction. That is, if photography is not already art, what is it?
Linda Gregory
Whatever it is, it works, Peter, but glad you explained it.
Peter Hill replied
thanks Linda, just having some fun
Scott d'Almeida

Hi Peter, still difficult to understand, English is not my native language, I live in Germany. What do you mean by “tongue in your cheek”. And what is a “Rex Mossop special”? Well, “art and / or photography seems to be a not an oxymoron (like e.g. virtual reality) but a senseless mixture of categories. Photography is a medium which can be used for
passport-portraits, documentation of drivers who are too fast, for scientific purposes or just to bring home a souvenir from holidays in Paris. Sometimes it is used to create artworks. My suggestion to change “art and / or photography is: “image or text”. What do you think about it?
Peter Hill replied 22 days ago
Sorry, will try to explain.
Tongue in cheek – the words spoken are deliberately not the truth and meant to be recognised as such.
Rex Mossop special – Rex was a football commentator whose mixed metaphors were legendary. My favourite was: “That’s the most unheard of thing I have ever heard!”
My point in uploading this upside image and writing a suitable Description was to demonstrate the inherent contradiction forced upon us photographers uploading artwork.

Sydney is blessed with many rockpools along its rugged coastline – concrete walled sections on natural rock platforms, most of which were created between 1910 and 1960. In today’s environmentally-conscious world they would not be built. This image was shot at dawn at the largest such pool – North Narrabeen – which also happens to be my favourite. Many dawns have been spent shooting here, in between conversations with the senior locals having their dip:
And last, but not least, Photography = Art
Phew! Had not realised I had shot so much there!
Cheers

Hello Peter – well, I’m an “arty farty” artist (only I’m pretty well grounded, with it) and believe you me this new take on art and/or photography scares the you=-know-what out of me. Thank goiodness I’ve had 12 years messing around in computer graphics so my brain is already totally friend. This image and especially your explanation had me rolling on the floor, so just HAD to post a comment. Well done, well said – I love it!
