The Gap - Hat Head National Park
Perhaps my favourite shot from our recent trip to Hat Head. With this one I tweaked the white balance just a tad to bring out the background rock a bit more, and cropped some sky and left frame.

Peter, where is Hat Gap? Reminds me of Big Sur along the Califorinia Coast, South of San Francisco…. The composition, lighting, subject all bang on… love the wispy clouds to boot! The bar is raised once again….
Peter Hill replied
Thanks Larry! The Gap is at Hat Head, which is about 500 kilometres (300 miles) north of Sydney. It is north of Crescent Head and south of Smokey Cape, and not to be confused with the infamous Gap at Watsons Bay in Sydney.

Hi Peter, do you focus on the rocks, then put the filters on the camera, could you tell me your method?
Peter Hill replied
When using the x400 filter, I will take maybe a test shot without it to firstly check the composition, ie is the shot worth the Black Glass. Then I will use the AF to focus, then immediately switch the lens to MF before screwing the filter on, otherwise if left on AF the lens will shift the focal point as it fruitlessly (mostly) searches for light. Then I screw on the Lee adaptor ring, unless, as sometimes happens, the ring is still tight on the filter from the last shot. Then I slide in the Lee Grad ND FIlter, which of late I’ve been using the 0.6 Hard a bit too much. Then a test shot is taken, by which means I then adjust the speed, usually, or sometimes the aperture, and usually the grad ND at the same time. Hopefully after that, the actual light is still good enough!

I can see why you and so many othres are elated with this scene. The colors are phenomenal as is the detail and interesting naturism. Several years ago when my wife and I traveled to the Pacific Northwest USA, we found it getting late and were having no luck in finding an inn for the night. Finally, dead tired, we found a place to pull off and sleep a few hours in the car. It was totally dark as we drove up switchback after switchback to find whatever scenic point was supposedly the reason for the National Park sign we had encountered. We finally got there and went to sleep. Natural urges caused us to both awake shortly after sunrise and my wife comes running back to me and said you have to see this …. from our vantage point atop Mount Walker we could see all the way to Mount Ranier and as far as eye could see, there was nothing in the middle except a marvelous carpet of low lying clouds. My only lament now is that I was still a beginning photographer and did not have the skill to capture it properly. I am so hopeful on my next trip, I’ll find a similar scene and do as well in documenting the sight as you have done with this marvelous photo.
Thanks for sharing
