Valley Of The Waters - Blue Mountains
This photograph was taken in the middle of the day, from atop a boulder residing in the middle of the Valley Of The Waters Creek, somewhere above Vera Falls and in a spot we christened Leech City (for good reason). Patches of temporary sunlight streamed onto the ferns and other greens through the occasional rips in the jungle canopy caused by fallen giants, and given the depth of the valley below the high canyon walls, it was at times a race to capture the light’s effect before the darkness again descended.

Peter Hill replied
thanks Angel!

Now that is a cool image in more ways than one. The cool colours give the impression of being deep in a rainforest. The long exposure time has not resulted in much noise by the look. Well exposed and processed. A favourite for sure!
Peter Hill replied
thanks Andrew – the x400 filter is very very dark, hence the long exposures possible even at ISO 50. Just need the vegetation to be still!
Lorraine Creagh
I love the green colouring in this Peter. Perfect in bringing out the details.
Peter Hill replied
thanks Lorraine – I was really pleased to be able to capture the deepness of the green at this place, especially after the heavy rain the previous day and night – in which we had been caught 3 hours walk back up to the car!
kathy s gillen...

Megan Martin
WOW!! Stunning capture Peter…love those blues and greens!!! Such a peaceful and serene feeling!
Peter Hill replied
thanks Megan. Tatiana is actually there too shooting the far cascade, just out of frame on the right. Though only metres away, we were using hand singles because of the constant roar of the water. And yet, it was indeed very peaceful and “quiet”, and it gave us the overall feeling of slowing down.
LindaR
this is amazing ~ you’ve made the falls look like they’re melting there way through ~ in a light all their own ~ just wonderful xx
Peter Hill replied
thanks again Linda!!
Wendi Donaldson
Beautiful Peter….knowing how much work it was to get there and having to fight off all the leeches…Ick!....makes this all the more special!! Well done.
Peter Hill replied
thanks very much Wendi – yes, normally leeches are a real turn-off, but this location on this day was just too remote and too good to give up!!!

Peter, you captured the essence of that creek in this shot, just exceptionally good! And I love that you added pebbles in the foreground leading to the large rocks at the back. One of your best! A favourite :-)

OOOOOoooooooOOOOOoooooooooo!! What PURE MAGIC you’ve captured here, Peter!! You give me hope that perhaps there IS something beautiful to capture in the dark woods around here! I’m definitely going to have to look into purchasing some filters! I had a CP filter that got stuck last year… broke it getting it off… couldn’t get the magic tool for that shipped here Just a tad filter-shy now! Couldn’t use my camera till I got it off… so I just had to apply brute force!
Peter Hill replied
thanks DJ. This is one of my personal favourites from the recent trip. I know what you mean about filters getting stuck. The thread on the filter I used for this shot is really tight, and the day before as I was screwing it on the lens, I dropped. At the time I was standing on a rock on top of Lodore Falls (about 30m drop). The filter hit a rock dead on the rim, then rolled into the water. I retrieved it and used it for the shot, and it wasn’t until after that I spotted a chip missing from the filter at the spot where it had met the rock. End result was each shot using the filter has a little flare happening at the edge. For this shot the flare was at the bottom of the frame, so the image is cropped accordingly. Replacement filter is now safely in kit (and it has a better thread btw) and I can’t wait to get back to this spot!

The light and colours are really something in this photo – excellent work. You have inspired me to get some ND filters.
Peter Hill replied
Cool. I can recommend Lee for your grad NDs, say .3 (1 stop) to .9 (3 stops). Lee filters are handmade and don’t get the purple tinges evident in the machine-made Cokin NDs. The x400 is a Hoya and it is pretty extreme at 10 stops, being designed for solar eclipses, but it produces the goods on landscapes and water and especially for shooting timelapse in daylight generally. But shop around as the prices are variable. I’ve seen the 77mm x400 advertised for between $129 and $250. Hoya also do a 72mm and 67mm x400
Richard Stanley
Thanks Peter – will definitely look into it.
