Early Evening In The Garden Of Good And Evil
Early Evening In The Garden Of Good And Evil was shot at Elkington Park in Balmain, Sydney, in the company of millions of mosquitos and batches of bats.
Since being Featured Art by Redbubble and in the Night Photography Group, this work has become one of my most popular images on RB. It is also one of the works I am most proud of, especially as I had no set shooting agenda before I arrived at the location of this magnificent tree, a favourite spot.

Wow, do I love the smooth texture of those roots… and the way you`ve highlighted them against the leaves both in the tree and on the ground is stunning.
Peter, this has got to be one of the way coolest tree pictures I have seen in ages. In fact, it`s one of the coolest BW shots I`ve seen in ages… full of splendid, eye popping dynamic.
I love this!!
Peter Hill replied
Thanks for that feedback BB – awesome. A story. Got home from a long day in the office, after stopping off at the supermarket to feed the daughter, cooked her a meal in 5 mintues, then busted outta there as I had not clicked a shutter for, what? 24 hours. Just took the camera, the cable, the tilt+shift lens, the tripod. Got to this park about 20 minutes after sunset. Dark under the tree, but there was a park lamp off to the right. Then I noticed there was zero wind. Cool. Then I realised this favourite tree of mine was finally gonna get caught. But it was so dark under it, I couldn’t see the lower shot, and I estimated the focal length and turned the focus ring by feel, ie just past 3.5 metres and just short of infinity. With no wind I knew I could timelapse to get the light happening and the shadows. Test shot at 30 seconds was too bright and washed out. This was the second go. The middle shot was aimed in a straight horizontal line. Zero cropping after the photomerge. With the tilt+shift lens, merging is 100% precise – no fudging it necessary. It’s an awesome little piece of technical wizardry, and the creative scope is endless. Nervous excitement growing as I await my Lee Filter System (NDs, Mist, to name a few).......
billyboy
... and I`m not through yet… that mouth in the middle whistling woodsey tunes is amazing.

Peter Hill replied

Yeah, I’d love a tilt&shift… would save me lots of time in Photoshop!
And behind every magical shot, there’s a story…. but next time your daughter should cook her own dinner and save you 5 mins of valuable shutter speed!!
Peter Hill replied
Got that right! Especially since I found out later her boyfriend ate it instead!

Peter Hill replied

ANNETTE HAGGER
Do you know what sort of tree it is Peter? Id be interested to know !..anna : )
Peter Hill replied
The tree is a Moreton Bay Fig Tree. In the 19th century, the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney planted many of them within its grounds and promoted their planting elsewhere in Sydney in its many parks. Specimens such as this one are well over 100 hundred years old and are quite plentiful still, all around our city, particularly in beachside parks such as at Balmoral and harbourside parks as Balmain, where this tree resides.
Michelle Walsh
Fantastic capture Peter – it reminds me of a childrens book about Moreton Bay figs – Patricia Bernard’s “Riddle of the Trumpalar”. She got the idea looking at the figs in Trumper Park.
Peter Hill replied
cool! Thanks Michelle!
Paul (Quixote)...

Wow, I don’t think I even need to put my comment here with so many others already describing what they feel about this tree! Just want to add that this lens surely produces dvery interesting results. I love this shot :D, looks very surreal.
Peter Hill replied
thanks Owen. I wasn’t really able to do this tree justice until I got the wide angle titlt+shift on it. Yet, I would have loved to have been able to get more of its trunk and canopy in frame. Now THAT would be totally Dali!
Rosalie Dale IPA
THAT’S what it reminds me of – I was scratching my head here – Dali!!!

Peter Hill replied
thankyou CJ and Terry! (my eldest son is known as CJ in our family!)
As you are probably aware, the title was inspired by John Berendt’s Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil. When I completed the processing it just reminded me of Clint Eastwood’s film. Moody

Thanks again Mac. I have shot many similar trees in the BotGar and surrounds many times but, no, this specimen resides in Elkington Park in Balmain, halfway between the rotunda and the Dawn Fraser Pool. In fact I was only there again, for the umpteenth time, shooting this tree one night last week, in 3 shot shifts using the 24mm f3.5L Tilt+Shift lens.

Peter, I haven’t posted or been involved with Red Bubble much but this shot came to my attention some time ago and I have looked at it often – so much so I have purchased a TS-E 24 . I am interested in taking similar shots / landscape (the tiny town thing does little for me) and while I understand it will take some time to master I am interested at the technical components – which merge tool you used and what if any pre merge raw processing you have done ?
DebT fellow Canon user
Peter Hill replied
It’s wonderful to know this image has inspired you this way!
Don’t forget the 24mm TS-E is a reasonably good wide angle lens in its own right. I have found softness only really being an issue after 100m or so.
The 3 images I shot were in jpeg. At that time, I was using a PC with Photoshop CS 2, v9.0 installed. I was shooting in jpeg as CS 2 does not have an upgrade for the 5D Mark II and I was soon to acquire a Mac. In Photoshop, I used the manual Photomerge function. Being a TS-E, the images were a perfect fit, with no distortion.
Obviously, RAW images would be better! However, with RAW files shot with the TS-E on the Canon 10D, the CS 2 Photomerge would convert the file in the merge.
I am still trying to get an application for which I can merge TS-E RAW files shot with the 5D Mark II. Canon’s utility, which came with the camera body, is Digital Photo Professional. It is excellent in converting RAW files (eg it won’t try and convert monochrome RAW files like other applications), but it does not have a Photomerge function. I tried a freeware stitch application but it did not recognise the images as being non-distorted, so basically overcompensated, which cause none of the stitching to match.
I am assuming at this stage that CS 4, with the 5D Mark II upgrade, will be able to handle TS-E RAW files for stitching. I just don’t like paying so much money for just that feature!

Peter;
Such an exceptional image .. you are well justified to be extremely proud of this. I’m very much focused on B&W work with my own images and the tonal range you have in this image absolutely SINGS!
Have you printed this image? I’m sure it would absolutely glow if printed on Ilford’s Gold Fibre Silk paper ( the only paper I will use now for my gallery prints).
Peter Hill replied
thank you very much Arie for your feedback – much appreciated!
I have a large framed print of this image on my office wall, courtesy of RB’s own production, but no, I haven’t printed it myself.
Five days after this shot I returned to the tree about an hour before sunset, before the lamps came on, and just after a summer storm. This time I had a model, who I placed within the depths of the trunk to add scale for another 3 shot shift image. That image I have printed myself on A3 and A3+ on a newly-acquired Canon Pixma 9500 Mark II. I am still experimenting with various papers, and last night printed an A3+ on Ilford Classic Gloss. I have not used Ilford’s Gold Fibre Silk yet, but given your comment it will definitely be the next sample of paper! cheers

Sarah Jones
Absolutely gorgeous work. Everything about this shot is perfect. I especially love the intricate detail in the root system of the tree and the black and white brings out the textures beautifully.
Peter Hill replied
thanks Sarah. It’s a very photogenic tree:
The above image was shot by GiGee, who got married in that spot.
Each time I shoot it I get a different look.
But you should see the one right next to it!
The above image was shot by Tatiana, who was also my model for the other shot.
