9am New Year's Day 2009

Peter Hill

9am New Year's Day 2009

We had been shooting since 6.30am after racing into the city to capture the fog. We started at the Royal Botanic Gardens and slowly made our way around to Bennelong Point. The morning was crisp, bright, quiet, still, and the light was sensational. At the Opera House the cleaning crews were at silent, diligent work. One of several working on the steps, this young lady was not in a hurry and indeed was quite intent on her task. I had plenty of time to compose the shot and she was not even aware of my presence.

    I really love this shot.

The bucket could do with a little more space from the edge of the frame, especially along the bottom, the composition feels a bit tense.

Feel free to delete my comment if I offend.

  • Peter Hill replied

thanks sjem. No offense, indeed you confirmed a niggle I had. As the challenge I uploaded it for hasn’t started yet, I re-uploaded the image slightly less cropped at the bottom. On the left there was the edge of the next sail so that was out, and further down was the start of more steps. I wanted to keep the centre of the image at the top of the steps.

The contrast between the grand structure and the humble cleaning lady is great. I don’t know if this was a “found” moment but it feels like it, and it tells a great story.

  • Peter Hill replied

Hi Ajay. I uploaded this image on a whim, and it ended up on the RB Featured Art page. I have now just added some words to the Description. This was most definitely a candid shot, but I had plenty of time to compose it. My first aim was to get the steps behind her, but then I realised something much more could be brought into frame.

    Elizabeth Bravo

WOW, What a great shot. With out the cleaning lady it would have been Superb, but with, it became outstanding. I love the position of the bucket…..It is a perfect composition. Great job.

  • Peter Hill replied

Hello Elizabeth. I am really sorry I missed your comment (??). This photo came towards the ond of a long walking shoot, and I was in the frame, so to speak, mentally. But it was luck to have her there, alone, and I had plenty of time to compose my shot. I shot one beforehand from the side, but I woke up to the backdrop potential, and I was sooo glad to get the bucket in frame before I clicked.

I like this for two reasons beyond the obvious appeal of the building. One, having lived in Manhattan for near 20 years, there is to my mind no big scenic vista, no colossal venue that humbles man by shear size. When people do something big here it’s either in the street or Central Park, neither of which celebrates civilization. Anyway, second is that very realization of how the mass makes the lone worker so small, suggesting an absurdly impossible task.

    G’day PETER!

You have brought to my attention something I had never even thought about before – the cleaning of the steps at one of our Aussie icons.
Such a menial yet absolutely necessary task when compared to all the ‘arts’ and ‘arty’ people that frequent this prestigeous venue.
That you have made a very fine B&W image of this simple scene makes my viewing a visual treat.
Your photography has made the ordinary extraordinary. Applause!
