All The Way

All The Way

I finally got to lose my virginity and go all the way with a rainbow.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Sigma 10-20mm EX DC HSM lens
Filter: Warm
ISO: 250
Speed: 1/100 sec
Aperture: f5.6
Focal length: 18mm
Straight from the camera. The Sigma 10-20mm has significant barrel distortion on the full frame 5D Mk II and is virtually unusable at 10mm. The effect at 18mm can be seen in the top corners.

crikey ! no half measures here!! brilliantly captured peter!

  • Peter Hill replied

thanks ding! amazing thing is I had both cameras there and all my lenses and gear, and Andromedae too (who lets me use her 24-105!). I managed a few different shots before the rainbow disappeared. It had been good for about 15 minutes.

Wow, Wow, and _WOW, Peter, what a fabulous way to lose it! this is magical. The rainbow is such an amazing frame for that divine light. It also provides a magnificent frame for the building, so welllight by the coloured light, and the very sharp shadows. Awesome shot.

  • Peter Hill replied

    Impressed eh?? thanks clarkey!

This is one beauty of a capture,a real standout from the rest. You should be so proud of this as
i have seen quite a few of this type of photography…Awesome Peter

  • Peter Hill replied

Gee thanks mate, that’s a huge compliment!

  • Andrew Gray

    Andrew Gray

I love the bold composition with the dark corner and just a touch of blue sky and light on the building. Very nice.

  • Peter Hill replied

Interesting observation Andrew. The rainbow seemed to be providing a border for the clouds and lights. As the minutes passed it just got bolder and brighter and the light below got more and more intense.

  • ElRobbo

    ElRobbo

I’ve seen this phenomena several times before, but this capture is just awesome, Peter!
    Well done mate!

  • Peter Hill replied

    That’s huge! Thanks!

    Jared Revell

    cool :-)
Did you have a few filters on Peter ?

  • Jared Revell

    Jared Revell

oops, I just re-read your info and see that you had the 10-20 on the MII ~ makes sense now.

  • Peter Hill replied

Didn’t really want to shoot with the 10-20 on the 5D Mark II, but I really wanted to get the whole rainbow in the frame, so went for it. I would have grabbed Andromedae and her 24-105 f2.8L but at this particular moment she was still on the other side of the bridge behind me (you can see the shadows of the bridge pylons in the foreground)

  • Anne Staub

    Anne Staub

    Stunning capture!

  • Peter Hill replied

    thanks Anne!

  • Jared Revell

    Jared Revell

yep, they are some huge shadows, cast from that low sun ~ perfect for that massive rainbow !
I didn’t realise the 10-20 would mount on the MII.

  • Peter Hill replied

Yeh, it does. Same mount. Now keeping it on the 10D – which feels positively tiny and dinosauric now when I pick it up compared to the 5D Mk2 with grip. Will need to think very carefully about choosing next wide angle lens, and the 24mm f1.4L II “released” at the same time as the 5D Mk2 might be the go, but am seriously looking at the 15mm f2.8 fisheye as well after missing out on a real bargain price the other day.

Hi Peter, Great capture. I bet you were cursing about missing out on the fisheye!! I think the barrel distortion adds a little to it…......but only a little:-). Might get the new 5D out this weekend so be prepared!!

  • Peter Hill replied

Spot on! I could NOT believe it. Two days after missing out and my first full rainbow, double at that. Un – f** – believable.

I just noticed you were talking about the 15mm fisheye. I have both 15 and 14mm and use them on the old 5D. I loved the 15 on my 20D, but it distorts wayyyy too much on the 5D….much prefer the 14, which is straighter…..I don’t know the technical talk for it all, but the 15 is proper fisheye, with very round curves if not held perfectly level, whereas the 14 does architecture and lines and keeps them straight….if you can test them before buying, I’d do so….soz for breaking into your comments….love the rainbow!! Jealous of your new cam :D

  • Peter Hill replied

That’s very interesting, Mel. I was aware of the curved lines with the 15mm fisheye as opposed to rectilinear wide angle lenses, ie my understanding is the 15mm is Canon’s only intentionally distorted EF lens. That said, I very much want to try it at least, as curves can be straightened in processing, whereas competing sloping lines cannot without producing an awkward look to the composition. Then again, composition is equally important ie avoiding straight lines to the left and right edges of the frame. I’m aware the 14mm has a good rep though so haven’t discounted it. So many choices!!

  • Mel Brackstone

    Mel Brackstone

I know….the choices are endless….lol! I thought I’d point out the differences…..since I just LOVED the 15mm from the day I bought it, with the 20D….but just can’t get the same feeling for it with the 5D….maybe the fact I dropped it and it doesn’t focus properly anymore doesn’t help….heh. Hope you can get a chance to test them! I’ll be in Sydney in Jan, with both lenses….might be able to hook up if you want to try?

Hello Peter.. glad I ‘found ’ you .. why ? My intrest in the 5 D mark ll and as an extra bonus I got to see a lot of fantastic good photo’s .. also from the Olympis ..I hope in the mean time you figured out the RAW processing for the 5D.. if it helps ..I am a PhotoShop CS3 user; but last week bought the PaintShopPro X2 (latest) and to my surprise it handled my RAW from the Canon 40D pretty well. In fact VERY pretty well! ( or you might try this on line and free editing
program: www.picnik.com.. I dont know about RAW there but try.. its free)
So Peter in the ‘down under’ ..Greetings from Holland:
    John

  • Peter Hill replied

Hello John. thank you for your comments and compliment. You should join the 5d Mark II Group. There you will see some truly amazing photography all achieved with this awesome camera.

As for the RAW files, this is an issue that highlights the ongoing failure of the major manufacturers to agree on a RAW protocol. Worse, each manufacturer changes its RAW “format” for each new camera! For example, CS2 recognises the RAW files I shoot with the 10D, but the 5d Mark II? Forget it. I am trialling CS4 with the Camera RAW 5.2 plug-in for the 5D Mark II but it still won’t recognise my RAW files, which means I am doing something wrong. I’ll get there somehow! Meanwhile, I have over 100 gigabytes of RAW files waiting patiently ….

    John44

Peter.. again about this program PaintShop ProX2 ..go try to download a ‘trial version’ for a few weeksand see if it works on your new Canon.
