Web Of The Steel Arch

Web Of The Steel Arch

Web Of The Steel Arch depicts the inner side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and was shot in RAW using a handheld Canon EOS 10D with Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM lens and Warm and UV Filters, ISO 100, 1/250 sec at f5.6, at 60kph. I was the driver, not the photographer. Andromedae shot the shot. The gear was mine, and I processed the image, which included cropping and straightening, and the SC. I guess that makes it a collaboration. We weren’t actually there to shoot the Bridge. We were on our way to the Lane Cove Tunnel, for the curved lines. Long story, but wrong lens.

  • Sara Lamond

    Sara Lamond

the “wrong lens” gave you a great shot!

  • Peter Hill replied

oh sorry, need to clarify – spur of the moment decision to shoot the tunnel but didn’t have the 10-20mm, only the 50mm. It stops down to 1.4 so I thought we might get something on the Bridge on the way to the tunnel. The tunnel shots are, well, let’s move on ….. :)

  • Peter Hill replied

Oh, I should add, apart from saying thanks, that even though this shot is not obviously taken from a moving vehicle, if anyone attempted this shot from the ground they would be pancake in seconds! I was in the far right lane heading north – smack bang in the middle.

  • Sara Lamond

    Sara Lamond

Oh, I totally understand about the traffic on the bridge – but I do have to disagree a tiny bit. You see, I was standing smack bang in the middle, walking south, when I shot this one

Of course, the bridge was closed to traffic at the time :)

Ha! You and 100,00 others! :)

  • Gina ...

magnificent shot … reading your rundown you obviously know the technicalities of your craft … the flag is a ‘where’s wally’ touch … its a little aha moment when looking at the intracacies of the pattern/design …. great shot >>> Gina

Great teamwork. Love the square crop and funny story. Do you have a convertible?

  • Peter Hill replied

Thanks Crispin. No, this was taken from inside a Subaru. But I did clean the windshield beforehand and urged my shooter up close to it.

Peter-this is a work of art! Fantastic viewpoint that is unique from the many nice post card pics we see on R.B. of the S.H.B. really enjoy the repeating lines & symmetry of the steel work & in doing so showcases the engineering involved, instant favorite for me!

  • Peter Hill replied

Thanks very much Ron. I’m guessing someone would have been able to recreate this shot during yesterday’s bridge closure for the picnic!

what an amazing shot! i am a bit confused though…... where is the pavement on this bridge? hmmmm… did you guys climb up into this?? obviously, i’ve never seen the bridge ;D

    GREAT work!

  • Peter Hill replied 27 days ago

    Hi Tricia

This shot was taken from the front passenger seat of my car as it travelled in the middle lane at 60 km/h, looking through the front windscreen while I was yelling Shoot! Shoot!
The pavement is way off to the right out of frame.

    thanks!

This is a masterful shot – the perspective, the lighting and the shadows are perfection – Structural photo for structural bridge !!!

  • Peter Hill replied 27 days ago

Thanks Iwona. It was a collab. My camera, my lens, my masterful driving to position Tanya right in the middle lane and my “encouragement” [see reply above]. We could see the “tunnel” ahead of us opening up, and the timing was a bit hairy given the traffic.
