A super shot…an interesting view of a mundane object. It looks great against the backdrop of the old bricks. The concrete blocks provide a natural base to the image too. Well done.

  • Peter Hill replied

thanks Phil – I think you’ve articulated for me why I am drawn to this image – what prompted me to shoot it.

you know, i’ve tried capturing these kinds of stairs, and always end up with a huge mess of iron and shadow on brick. this is so much cleaner and more visually pleasing! awesome.

  • Peter Hill replied

hi Nikki – sorry for the late response. some factors were in my favour. first, the rain immediately prior – all haze gone. second – I was directly opposite yet far enough away to avoid the upwards angle and intereference from the sky, courtesy of the zoom. third, the position of the sun – directly behind me and to my upper left. None of which was planned – just happened. ie i got lucky. :)

There is something about the light in this which makes it feel slightly surreal – it’s fantastic.

  • Peter Hill replied

thanks sjem – think midday, heavy short shower of rain, and just deep harbour water between me and the stairs – the light was zinging.
