Nice shot Peter but what is HDR image I’ve seen it mentioned constantly can yo enlighten me

  • Peter Hammer

    Peter Hammer

Thanks Christine. HDR = high dynamic range. You can achieve that either by taking a series of images with different exposures or from a single raw file. Software such as photomatix combines multiple images with different exposures to compress the tonal range. The resulting images often look a bit flat and need some extra processing afterwards to restore some contrast. Using HDR you can effectively get say 8 stops of brightness to display as a compressed range of say 5 stops. It does much what is done in-camera with a tone conversion curve to jpg but with much greater dynamic range.

That is one hell of a storm front. Did you manage to dodge the rain?

  • Peter Hammer

    Peter Hammer

Thanks smylie. Unfortunately it was nearly all show and the rain which came was more like a drizzle and didn’t last. Perhaps it deposited a load inland but not on me.

Which Black Rock? In Nevada there’s a Black Rock Desert. I’m curious to find out where yours is.
It’s a very beautiful photo—the clouds are thick, black, and threatening; powerful and dynamic. In a word—beautiful.
