A couple of years ago I was introduced to the Merewether Ocean Baths via some brilliant photography here on RedBubble. Well I found myself in Newcastle over the weekend and couldn’t resist a trip down there for dawn on Monday. I chose this image for uploading to RB as it best captures the expectant mood of dawn … the 1, 2, 3 of day is about to explode but in the pre-dawn light all is still. And in these moments I find great peace.
You know Peter, this almost makes me want to leave the comforts of my bed to venture out into the big wide Stupid O’Clock world to see these types of magical sites.
almost
:)
Do it in winter … when the sun rises at a more reasonable hour …
I love the beach at dawn Peter! Especially if it presents me with the opportunity to go for a swim! Apart from the obvious visual appeal (captured beautifully btw) of the dawn moments, the thing that I love most is the smell…..
It’s a smell that’s not present at any other time of the day, and it’s what makes the dawn so beautiful for me.
It’s probably the reason I enjoy my 5am starts so much :)
this is really special Peter, I love the light and those gentle reflections in the water… also your description, clever with the 1,2,3 .. I rested by the rockpools late this arvo and enjoyed such peace, I found 2 little seastars and marveled at the suction on their little arms..water has such a way of calming the soul…beautiful work!
Thanks Karin – we spend so much effort shutting ourselves off from our environment and in the process we diminish an important part of life. Living in a smaller town gives you a better ability to connect with ‘the world’ and for that I’m very envious!
Peter, is that really you? Back on RB! You’ve been missed. *This is an amazing image, I love the lighting and DOF. It is great to see you back!!!!! :o) I use to be FlowersEtc on RB, I went to my real name.
Hi Ann – I’m very often lurking around on RB – but keeping a low profile. Thanks for stopping by!

Aren’t they just the most amazing baths? You’ve caught some great reflections, and I love the colour in the sky!
Cheers Mel. I think it was some of your work that initially put me onto the baths – thanks!
