A shot of a water vole aka water rat of Wind in the Willows fame. He takes a pause from feeding on some pond weed to throw me a brief glance. Due to predation by mink I believe that this is one of, if not the rareest mammal in Britain. Taken in Surrey, UK in captivity.

Very nicely composed and the shallow dof, combined with focusing on the Water Rat’s head, lend a wonderful almost 3D feel to the Water Rater Rat. Lovely detailing of the coat, catchlight in the eye, as well as nice available light. I can judge somewhat by the duck weed on the water’s surface that the Water Rat must be quite small! Sad to know the Water Rat is so rare. Lovely work Peter!

  • Thanks Sandy, they are charming and very shy creatures, often popping in and out of the water. I had to do quite a lot of work in lightroom to correct he exposure, as the original was pretty overexposed. Luckily the highlights didnt blow out. Thanks for the indepth comment :)

Detailed and lovely. I like the environment you captured this vole in (very similar looking to our muskrats).

  • Thanks Barbara, I also have a shot of a muskrat that I saw on the grand mesa in Colorado, a bit smaller (the vole) but yes, very similar:)
