Guinea Punk
A profile shot of a guineafowl taken in the Shimba Hills Reserve in Kenya. I’m not exactly sure which species, possibly Helmuted or Vulturine., but dosn’t really look like either. If you know please let me know.
The background is natural and has not been edited in anyway.

I had to click on this…it is quite amazing. Definitely has vulture-like charateristics but is also comical. I think it is that ‘hair’ ...what a personality you have captured here…even has a polka outfit~ :)) Anni

this is an amazing looking bird, i believe it is a helmeted guineafowl and its a baby, as the crown isnt fully developed as an adult.

Here’s an adult one:
Peter Denness replied
Thanks for all your comments Lisa. I never thought it could be a juvinile, although the colouring seems different, with blue around the eye instead of red. Perhaps this changes with age or varies in individuals. Thanks for taking time to look at my photographs

superb capture!

Hey Peter! this is a cool shot with heaps of character. U know i have grown up with these birds (guinea fowl) and never bothered to photograph one properly. I think its the fact that they are so evasive and also so annoying due to their horrible call which sounds like a led ball being shaken repeatedly in a metal drum. Nice Capture!
Peter Denness replied
Thanks Steve. I was lucky with this one all the others were blurred. They’re are great birds, although I dont think I heard them during the night.

Peter… he is so ugly but also beautiful, I too love these birds…..
I was looking in our local bird book and there is similar bird featured. He might be part of the crested guinea fowl species we get here in South Africa. Ours have that black crest like the one in your photo, but not as colourful as your guy! Well done on your feature!!!
Peter Denness replied
Thanks Debbie for your insight :-)
Virginia N. Fred
Oh look at that do , wow wonderful image
Peter Denness replied

Taschja Hattingh
It’s not a baby, they are a different guineafowl we have them here in SA as well. This one still has a little bit of ‘hair’ lol! Will ask Sandra to post her picture as mine was not that good..! Your’s is much better than mine, well done!
Peter Denness replied
Thanks Tashhja, hopefully this mystery will be cleared up….

Crested Guineafowl
Kenya Crested Guineafowl, Guttera p. pucherani
Conservation status
Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)[1]
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Galliformes
Family: Numididae
Genus: Guttera
Species: G. pucherani
Binomial name
Guttera pucherani
Hartlaub, 1860
The Crested Guineafowl (Guttera pucherani) is a member of the Numididae, the guineafowl bird family. It is found in open forest, woodland and forest-savanna mosaics in sub-Saharan Africa. It has a total length of approximately 50 cm (20 in) and the plumage is overall blackish with dense white spots. It has a distinctive black crest on the top of its head, the form of which varies from small curly feathers to down dependant upon subspecies, and which easily separates it from all other species of guineafowl, except the Plumed Guineafowl. Unfortunately, the names “crested” and “plumed” are often mis-applied across the species.
Peter Denness replied
Many thanks to you Taschja, the mystery of the guineafowl has finally been solved!

Nathan Mayfield
is this real?!
Peter Denness replied
Yeah Nathan, its 100% real. The background is unaltered too. It was taken just behind the Shimba Hills Lodge, in Kenya. Not sure why the backgroung came out like this though, just chance. I used photoshop elements for minor editing like contrast, saturation and shaprening
