i’m a huge fan of the orchid species, owing much of my collection to the generosity of my dear friend Graeme Banks.

Graeme along with his son David Banks, are orchid growers and run Hills District Orchids in Sydney. He makes sure that i am never without the Australian Orchid Review magazine, and sends me a copy hot off the press as his son David is the current editor. Every edition of this magazine contains many interesting articles & pictures promoting these incredibly beautiful flowers.

i would like to thank Graeme, who also happens to be President of Retina Australia , for his kindness and friendship through the years and as a small gesture of thanks, am donating this painting to help raise funds towards research into Retinitis Pigmentosa , a cause which he is most passionate about.

I intended to comment on the small white bits you left among the warm darks behind the orchid…that was a great move! It adds sparkle to your painting!

  • PERUGINA replied

  • PERUGINA replied

Hi Anni, thank you for popping in! Some dendrobiums have a strong fragrance particularly dendrobium speciosum – australian rock lily as they are sometimes known by.. these have a powerful perfume especially early morning – beautiful.. not sure about this one though! :) x

Love it, love it love it!!!!! Great handling and wonderful use of negative space…WELL DONE…

  • PERUGINA replied

This almost did not make it as a painting at all Rory, last week in the watercolour group i was told i could not stay in back (despite there being room) to finish it. If you know anything about watercolours you would know that you don’t want to move it around until all is stable.
Thank you for your enthusiastic, kind comment.. appreciate your continued support. :)

Very good use of floating water into color and vice versa…love the background!

  • PERUGINA replied

Thank you Ken, your comment indicates to me that you know something about watercolour :) in my case, sometimes it just works.. mostly it does not… i was lucky with this one. :)

I find this very rich and romantic.. and very sexy! :)

  • PERUGINA replied

Thank you Ming for your kind feedback – the orchid is a sexy flower – just my opinion :)

  • kenmeyerjr

    kenmeyerjr

yeah, that whole approach is give and take, trial and error, but it’s pretty neat and lively when it does!

  • PERUGINA replied

I must agree with you! A great deal of intuition and adaptability and also fast thinking as watercolour is contantly changing as it dries.. it is as you say neat when it all goes well.. and then sometimes (on occassion) better than you envisaged – you really need to be adaptable at the end of the day and just go with the flow!

  • kenmeyerjr

    kenmeyerjr

By the way, the scan seems sort of dull…making sure you match your original (and assuming you have photoshop), I would play with the levels a bit to get whiter whites and more saturated color.

  • PERUGINA replied

Thanks Ken – i try to keep my photos here as close to the original colourings as i can. I do thank you for the kind suggestion however. This work is fairly muted and not bright as the colour magenta would normally be on its own. :) I will have a play with the colours in Picasa – thank you.

  • kenmeyerjr

    kenmeyerjr

The main reason I thought this is that the unpainted area looks fairly gray and I can only assume that is the white of the paper.

  • PERUGINA replied

Hi, yes you are correct in assuming this is the white of the paper! In altering this through Picasa i find that it also alters the colours of the painting in the area of colour.. i’m not very computer savvy i’m afraid :( But i do appreciate your advice here Ken :)

  • kenmeyerjr

    kenmeyerjr

Well, if you DO have photoshop, just go to image-adustments-levels and move the sliders around (the left one makes it darker, the right one makes it lighter and the one in the middle adjusts it as well). I find I can make the art correct, and get the white back as well doing this. Just in case you want to try it.

  • PERUGINA replied

Thanks for that, i will have a go at trying to get the white a little whiter. Appreciate your help! :):):) and your time :)

  • kenmeyerjr

    kenmeyerjr

No problem…I think the work deserves it.
