The cropping, or rather the marginalisation of the subjects and that yawning negative space fragments and undermines what must have originated as a “family” portait. The tonal qualities and that abraided texture in the drawing only amplifies the sense for me that these must be “ghosts” or remnants of people long gone. It’s uncomfortable and compelling art.
