The Parade

The Parade by Per Ove Sleen

The Parade

The Parade is a picture I have worked on for more than three month. When ever I’ve had some spare time, I’ve been noodling around with this picture. Except for towards the end, cos then I was getting really tired of it.
Her at Stord the island I live, they have made a community center for junkies where they (ok we) can pick up their (ALRIGHT MY) methadone in stead of where we did pick it up, the chemistry.
So now everybody can see who comes and goes (they have only one errand there, everyone knows that and what it is), and it is of course in the middle of town (small tow, small people, small thoughts and presumably small brains too).
Very clever….....morons
This is my interpretation of that stupid and heartless situation….

Thank you very much my friend.
It varies a lot how much time I spend on a picture like this.
But I don’t think I could have done this in less than 2 weeks (doing other stuff too at the same time), cos I have very little patience. So when I’m working on very time consuming jobs like this I need to have several different jobs running at the same time as I also do practice, rehearsal and recording of my music. If not I get bored and start doing stuff I shouldn’t :-)
So at any given time there is at least 5 – 8 jobs (drawings) floating around in different states of Finished.
This makes it very difficult to say exactly how long time I spend on each…

you and i are similar, but i have no talent

You don’t need talent, I have non.
When I went to school I had two different teachers telling me I had absolutely no talents for music what so ever, and a third one told me about the same thing but this was about my art skills.
The worst part was that they were all right, I had no art talents what so ever.
And I also didn’t care, I was more in to football, fighter planes and later on girls.
But then I realized that playing music was a great way to get to know girls, and after a while I started enjoying playing guitar (after being in my first school band for 6 month), and then I started working. Now it is 34 years later, and I’m still at it (we’re going in studio this spring to cut a new album…my second one in my own name with my own band. Here is my first one done in 1996. Check it out ).
It also belongs to the story that I am the only person of my generation from that school to make a living as a professional musician (for more than 20 years).

Ten years ago I decided I’ve had enough traveling, hotel rooms and drunk audiences, and decided I wanted to do something with computers and graphics, so I went for it. Then five years ago I decided to teach myself to draw properly (the other thing I have absolutely no talent for). And for two years now I’ve had drawing and design as a living.

So much for talent, hard work will always get you a lot further.
I have seen your pictures, and your videos. And what I have seen, makes me believe you can do it if you want to. You only need to want it hard enough. Cos this job is worth any amount of hard work and sacrifices you will have to endure.
The day you realize, that when taken the time needed, you can draw just about anything thrown your way, is bound to be one of the biggest moments of your life (and I’ve had a couple of really big ones).

So if you feel like it, go for it…. :-)

your kind words of wisdom are true.
alas, for me, the focus is less on the graphic art and more on the music and video side.
so i suppose im doing ok.
i treat it like a job and certainly put the hours in.. soon i will play live.
i started making music 2 years ago.got local play on radio after the first year. not bad for a guy who cant read music or play an instrument..
ive been PAID to make a filmclip for an austrian band – something id never envision.
ive been asked to compose some music for the upcoming fringe festival here in sa…
so yeah i agree – talentless maybe a handicap but determination suceeds more often than talent..
    :)
your a champ per ove sleen – i love your art and i value yuor friendship my digital comrade..

Thanks and the same to you man. You were one of the first ones to make me feel welcome here on “the bubble”. I tend not to forget stuff like that :)
And by the way, as you know I have heard some of your music, seen some of your video work and I think you are going somewhere (as a matter of fact I think you will end up where you plan to end up…more ore less :
    ).
We are all sick and tired of Hollywood and the crap they have been puking out for decades. It’s now all up to guys and girls like yourself, and I must admit I like what I hear and see on grass root level now a days (haven’t done that for a while).

So Rock on man, and don’t take ANY prisoners… ;-)
