Mad Dog Morgan (aka John Fuller) was a kind of person who did things on impulse, then regretted it once it was too late. He would shoot a man in the back, then feel bad once he realised what he’d done.

In this painting Mad Dog Morgan is chasing after a young man named John McLean (on horse back) after he held up the Round Hill Station and shot two men. Once Mad dog realised what he’d done, he called out to McLean to go fetch a doctor. McLean got on his horse and rode off. This got Mad Dog thinking that the young man might bring back the police. So Mad Dog mounted a horse and chased after McLean, raising his gun and shot the young man in the back. Once again Mad Dog realised what he’d done and carried McLean back to the station. Apparently Mad Dog stayed by McLean’s side until he passed away.
