Eilean Donnan ( the Isle of Donnan ) Castle, was being used as a Jacobite stronghold during an uprising against England in the early part of 18th century, when it was captured and destroyed by the Royal Navy. After sitting in ruin for nearly 200 years, the property was purchased by Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap who proceeded to restore the castle to it’s former glory. In 1932 , after 20 years of effort and hard work the castle was reopened and is still owned by the MacRae family. It is also the most photographed castle in Great Britain.
