Artist's Description

This is the new chick of the Masked Lapwing that made it’s nest in the rocks on the open ground next to a car park late last year. Sometime called a Plover, the Masked Lapwing has spurs on the wings and will try to protect the chick by drawing the aggressors attention away by first feigning injury, looking more attractive to a predator; and then by attack.

I have been following the progress of this nesting pair. Of the 3 eggs just one has resulted in a chick. It’s a hard life. I take a shot each week of the chick and this appears to now be 2 weeks old. It is the cutest little thing.

Taken in Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia.

Canon 5D MkIII, Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS-L lens and Canon 2X converter.
