I had a fantastic experience near Wilcannia as I drove across the Outback highway. I stopped to stretch the old back a bit and take a photo… and saw a Mob of inquisitive locals looking over at the Land Cruiser. So I wandered over and they ran away a bit which prompted me to jump behind a bush, and they came back. I popped up and took a picture and they ran away so I jumped behind another bush and The Mob came back. So I scuttled along the bushes and popped up closer to them to take a quick pic and The Mob began to run away…. So I whistled as loudly as I could and kept at it, and as long as I whistled The Mob kept close by and looked at me. About this time I was happy for the fence between us as I could almost have touched them. I yelled out ‘BOO!’ and they ran away but came back when I whistled…..
The Emu is smaller than an Ostrich but can deliver a nasty kick if they wish. These guys were wild, but young and inquisitive. Here’s one of the pictures of The Mob of Emus…. Awesome buddies!
