Women, members of the Karen Tribe of Northern Thailand, near Chiang Mai, are called long necks because of these rings, which are started at a very young age, and added to yearly to create the culture’s notion of beauty..i,e. a long neck

I wonder about two things, Phil. One is, are the rings removable and worn only in public and two, do they have/need chiropractors? It seems terribly dangerous to me. A very interesting study! :-)
We were told they never take them off, there are no clasps in the back, but solid metal all around, as for chiropractors, what would they do, these gals get all the stretching, and pulling with the rings lol
Beautiful capture xx
lynnalthough the women were enured to their plight, for 21st century times it seemed out of sync with other advances for women in the world
Fantastic shot, Phil – those rings must be good for the posture – she is sitting so straight!
ShulieI wonder what the weight is collectively in that they are solid metal rings, brass I believe. Gotta be heavy, which may force the posture so as not to collapse
Al,these women are the showpieces in their tiny village, out and about, doing work, selling things…..all with these onerous rings around their necks
I wonder what would happen if they took them off – have the neck muscles atrophied so that they can’t hold their heads up?
Good question shulie, or they’re even stronger for having to tote these around
thanks jainie,it was something to find these people living in the 21st century with this ancient custom seemingly foreign to todays’ women
many thanks marie for this selection!! Always an honor to be featured!
thanks joseph, she was one of many women working in this tiny village with her rings on
