Illumination Night on Martha’s Vineyard, in the Campgrounds, a 178 year old tradition, includes lights of all kinds, often using brightly backlighted, decorated umbrellas.

Is this an indication of there being a mixed culture on the Vineyard? Wouldn’t surprise me, though! :-)
petenot really….certainly not Asian. Porches & balconies are decorated with Chinese & Japanese lanterns. A tradition going back to1869. Originally done as a come-on for prospective home buyers. Erasmus Carpenter was a land developer who built much of what today is Oak Bluffs (originally called cottage city)..resisted by the Methodists who came every summer to the “Camp Grounds” as of the devil. Erasmus brought bands, fireworks, and the illumination of the newly built cottages as incentives to come and look. The Methodists built a fence all around their property to wall it all off….things have changed
