Artist's Description

The Great War Memorial. AN ANGEL carries a fallen soldier from the battlefield in the large sculpture memorial to the CPR’s war dead in front of waterfront station, Vancouver, B.C. The Canadian Pacific Railway commissioned the Angel of Victory statue of an angel carrying a fallen soldier heavenward. It was done to commemorate the 1,115 CPR workers who were killed during the First World War. The sculptor was Coeur de Lion McCarthy of Montreal, who cast three copies of the statue in bronze: one for Vancouver, one for Winnipeg, and one for Montreal. It was unveiled in all three cities on April 28, 1922.
