Karela (Momordica Charantia), also know as bitter melon, bitter gourd, and bitter squash, pretty much gives you the idea. It has a rather bitter taste to it, but a core that has sweetness. It’s found in Asia, Africa, and the Carribean. It was first introduced from the Indian continent to China in the 14th century. Here it was in a market in Nanyuki, Kenya, Africa

Just a retired old guy who loves looking for an eclectic mix of subjects to photograph, from people, to places, to concepts, and enjoys all aspects of the hunt, the find, and the shot, plus dabbling in the post production.

I’ve always thought cucumbers could catch warts! I wonder how they use the bitter part. Interesting!

it gets discarded most places, but Asians tend to add those parts to “excite” flavor taste buds to the extreme….a la Thai food and its green sauces of fire!

they looked like they were in the cucumber family, so I was surprised to learn they were a fruit! rough edged, and firm to the touch!
