Down in the engine room of the restored classic TSS Ernslaw Steamship, sailing out from Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand, this gear mechanism was part of the ships’ works, all humming us across Lake Wakatipu

Just a retired old guy who loves looking for an eclectic mix of subjects to photograph, from people, to places, to concepts, and enjoys all aspects of the hunt, the find, and the shot, plus dabbling in the post production.

Ah, a controlled kinetic energy transfer device. So simple, yet reliable, the would last for years with simple routine maintenance. Today, if something wears out, you replace it… not so much because it can’t be repaired, but because it is outdated and costs less to buy new. Change! Too much, too soon, too fast!
    Nice one, Phil. :-)

so much “stuff” fits that category when you go for low cost manufacturing…things break=why fix=cheaper to replace=loop back
