I am having a hard time figuring out if this is a Rufous Morph adult, or a Dark Morph Adult Red Tailed Hawk. I am leaning towards the Dark Morph because it is dark all over with reddish tail, yellow legs.

“Red-tailed Hawks are large hawks with typical Buteo proportions: very broad, rounded wings and a short, wide tail. Large females seen from a distance might fool you into thinking you’re seeing an eagle.” (http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/red-tailed_h...;).
Their habitat is open country and are found on fences or fence post and telephone posts/polls.

Beautiful capture. The Red Tailed Hawk is in the Raptor Family and not considered a Songbird.

This looks a lot like the hawk that is watching our bird feeder and hoping to catch a bird!! I think ours is a red shouldered hawk. I took a photo through the window and haven’t looked at it yet. It won’t be crystal clear like this shot is though! lol This is fantastic!!

  • Good Morning SummerJade
Wow, thank you. This is the first clear shot I have gotten, It is only because I pulled a crazy move driving on a two lane highway with no pullouts to get it. I pass this hawk each time I drive to town for something and vise versa. I pulled my big mini van off the road into mud in order to get this picture. I am so surprised I FINALLY got a clear shot like this one… Thank You soo very much for looking…I appreciate your interest very much~!

    nicely done……..

  • Thank You~! This Hawk owned his territory for the longest time. One day a few weeks ago I found him dead. Two other Hawks moved in on his territory and destroyed him…. So sad…. but so is the circle of life…..
