Haiku(XV): Taking a long riverside walk at night...

Dark shadowy night,
With river bright as silver;
Reflecting the moon.

Haiku(XV): Taking a long riverside walk at night... by

I recall it was winter time; and, I’d just come back from visiting my cousins who lived in London’s Twickenham area. I crossed over the bridge, and, decided to go take a really long walk beside the riverside; the time was caught up somewhere between both evening and night. At the beginning of my journey, there was still fading sun light; but, by the end of my journey…walking all the way up towards Putney bridge; a journey lasting for quite a few miles…it was already pitch dark night.

I really don’t know if it was due to my poor eyesight…as I’m short sighted…meaning, can’t see things too clearly when they are at a far distance; but, when I looked at the river…after being surrounded by this all enclosing darkness…I couldn’t see ‘moving waves’, anymore; but, instead, all I saw was the river looked like being a totally flat sheet of ‘solid silver’…that one could very easily imagine standing/or, even walking on…that was mirroring the light of the moon. In fact, I was experiencing nothing more than a mere optical illusion…!

    this is really good. instant fav.

  • Thanks for your appreciative comment! ;-)

    But, me, I don’t know. Sometimes, I look at what I just wrote…; and, think, there’s something still missing…; like, maybe, simple is far too ‘simple’…; and, then, again, sometimes, complex is far too complex…; but, always there is this sense that something’s still missing…; and, that things aren’t quite ‘perfect’, yet?!

    Paul this is absolutely beautiful

  • Thanks! ;) I will resist the urge to try and point out what seems to be all of the poems weaknesses, to me; and, just learn instead to, quite simply, accept compliments.

    Chris is right on; this piece is gorgeous, and so uplifting (to me). It reminds me so much of one of my favorite songs by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. It’s called “Tiny Light.”It’s a “simple” song, but that’s why it’s so beautiful._"…As we all fall down it’s hard to see a brighter day butI see a tiny light like a flashbulb sparkle in the nightI see a tiny light telling everyone to hold on tight…"_
  • Thanks very much for your comment; and, I really loved reading the song that you’ve just gone and quoted! ;-)
