Artist's Description

The fortified cathedral at Beziers scene of the bloody massacre in July 1209 by Simon de Monfort and the crusaders against the Cathars. The crusaders slaughtered the entire population of the city which had taken refuge in the holy place. It is said that before the massacre one of Simon’s lieutenants asked him how the soldiers could know who were believers and who were heretics? The answer “Kill them all and God will know his own”
