Brush strokes by Paul Pichugin

I’ve been fascinated with the concept of painting with my camera lately.. as you can no doubt tell by my wave series. I think the simplicity of the coposition, combined with the paint like effect really works for me at the moment.

Taken at City Beach, Western Australia

Canon 5DmkII
Canon 70-200 f2.8L

200mm @ f32, 1/2 second shutter speed, ISO50.
Camera was panned at the same speed as the wave was moving

Very minor sharpening done in camera raw, contrast and colour achieved through camera settings.

    Wonderful work once more!
    I’m dying to try this!

  • When you do.. don’t do f32.. too much dust, try and use a ND8 filter or ND4 filter.. you’ll get the half second exposure and can use something like f16 instead..

Thank you a lot for your tip =)
I already have a ND8 filter! Do you achieve this effect under broad day light?!

  • This was in the late afternoon, just so I could get the sun through the waves, but yes, it was broad daylight :)

This is a very beautiful soothing image, Paul. I love the brushstrokes and the greens really give it that extra lift. A gorgeous simplicity. A fave.
