Burra South Australia

Burra South Australia

A shot of a ruin outside of Burra, South Australia.. I’m really looking forward to going back to Burra again, there is just so much to see and we were only there for less than 24 hours.

The motel in Burra is very comfortable and the owners are very friendly.. I’d recommend staying there :-)

nice shot paul – have you seen ken duncans work from here many years ago?

  • Paul Pichugin replied

Hey Craig, I don’t think I have seen Ken Duncan’s work from Burra.. the area is an amazing place for photographs.. I’m really looking forward to heading back there!

This ruin (as Glenn has mentioned) was on the cover of Midnight Oil’s “Diesel and Dust” album. I’ve been told the image was photographed by Ken Duncan himself, but have yet been able to confirm this.

It was also used as a prop in New Zealand’s Miss Popularity series back in 2004.

It is one of THE most photographed ruins in South Australia.

  • Paul Pichugin replied

wow.. that’s bizarre, I just stumbled on it in my travels.. lol I had no idea it was a famous ruin :-)

Famous indeed. :-) I happened to peruse a Ken Duncan book in the ABC shop this afternoon, which had that exact ruin on the cover as photographed for Diesel and Dust. So yes, it’s confirmed, he did do that shoot.

If you ever get a chance to stay in the Burra area for a weekend/long weeked, be sure to go to the Visitor Centre and get a key for the Heritage Trail ($5). It’s so very worth it for the photo opportunities and just learning about the history of this copper town. Took me 8 years of living in the area to finally do it and now I can’t recommend it highly enough.

  • Paul Pichugin replied

We only stayed overnight on our way out from Adelaide to Perth, my wife and I are hoping to get back there sometime in the next year and stay a little bit longer, we’d like to do taht Heritage Trail tour, it looked really interesting while we were there :-)

I remember going through Burra many times in the early 70’s for swimming carnivals. Amazing place. Think I even have this on old Super 8 silent film somewhere! Like the vignetting in this. And yes, thanks for the reminder about “Diesel and Dust” Helen!
