The town of Ironbridge got its name from being the site of the first bridge in the world to be made from cast iron.
The bridge which was finished in 1779 crosses the river Severn and has been constructed and assembled using woodworking techniques such as Dovetail joints and pegs, there are no rivets in the bridge at all!

Now a World Heritage site, Ironbridge Gorge near Telford, Shropshire, UK is a highly popular visitor attraction.

Wow, I never heard of a cast iron bridge..I am surprised it hasn’t all turned to rust. They must spend a fortune on paint.

  • It’s in suprisingly good condition….and well-painted!

Excellent angle on this historic bridge. I am a B&W freak so cant help wondering what it would look like. I think it would be excellent. It is owever lovely in colour as well

  • Thanks Gary. Funny you should suggest B&W. I wasn’t sure whether to convert it to B&W or leave it as it is….after your comment, I’ll give it a go.
    Thanks for the push! ;-)

I recognized this the minute I saw it come up on RB and recall some of my fondest memories of my trip to England sitting on a bench right down the river walk at the Valley Inn, I believe it’s called. This is a really beautiful perspective and a lovely image of an historic old bridge.

  • Thank you lianne. I’m so pleased that my image brought back memories of your trip to England. I’ don’t recall seeing the ‘Valley Inn’ in Ironbridge, but there is a place called ‘Meadow Inn’.
Thanks again for your kind comment.
